Day 213: Coins That Don't Pay Bills

At home, Jairus (A), fifteen, finds his mother, Ivy (B), beaming at the coins she has saved for months in a shopping app.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Ma, bakit po kayo nakangiti diyan sa cellphone?

Mom, why are you smiling at your phone?

  2. B

Tingnan mo, limang libong coins na ang naipon ko! Ipambabayad ko 'to sa kuryente.

Look, I've saved up five thousand coins! I'm using them to pay the electric bill.

  3. A

Ma, hindi po 'yan pambayad ng bill. Isang daang coins, piso lang po.

Mom, those can't pay bills. A hundred coins is only one peso.

  4. B

Piso? E 'di singkuwenta lang lahat ng 'to?

One peso? So all of this is only fifty pesos?

  5. A

Opo. Pang-discount lang po 'yan, hindi pang-Meralco.

Yes. They're only good for discounts, not for the Meralco bill.

  6. B

Akala ko pambayad 'to ng kuryente, pambawas lang pala sa susunod na order!

I thought these could pay the electric bill, but they only take a little off my next order!
