Day 214: Fifty Pupils and One New Teacher
Sheena (B), in her first year teaching Grade 4 at a public school in Tondo, tells her neighbor Gloria (A), a retired principal who taught for forty years, about her class of fifty.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
O, Sheena, ang lalim ng buntong-hininga mo. Kumusta ang klase?
Oh, Sheena, that's a deep sigh. How's your class?
-
B
Limampu po sila, Ma'am, at walang nakikinig. Sigaw na po ako nang sigaw.
There are fifty of them, Ma'am, and nobody listens. I just keep shouting and shouting.
-
A
Bakit hindi mo sila bigyan ng kaniya-kaniyang trabaho?
Why don't you give each of them a job?
-
B
Sinubukan ko na po, pero ayaw pa rin ng mga pasaway.
I've tried that, but the troublemakers still won't go along.
-
A
Ano kaya kung gawin mong class monitor ang pinakapasaway? Siya na ang sasaway sa iba.
What if you made the worst troublemaker the class monitor? Then he'll be the one telling the others off.
-
B
Si Jomar po? E siya po ang pinakamaingay!
Jomar? But he's the noisiest of them all!
