Day 1 of 185

Day 1: Too Perfect for Grade Nine

At a parent-teacher conference at a public high school in Navotas, Erwin (A), a young English teacher, shows Precy (B), a fish vendor, an essay her son turned in that he suspects was written by an AI app.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Ma'am, mukhang gawa po ng AI ang essay ni Jomar.

Ma'am, Jomar's essay looks like it was written by AI.

  2. B

Imposible, Sir! Nakita ko, nagsunog siya ng kilay hanggang alas-tres.

Impossible, Sir! I saw him burning the midnight oil until three.

  3. A

Naniniwala naman po ako, pero ni minsan, hindi niya nagamit sa klase ang "tapestry" at "multifaceted."

I do believe you, but not once has he used "tapestry" or "multifaceted" in class.

  4. B

Multi-ano? Kaya pala cellphone ang hawak niya magdamag, hindi ballpen.

Multi-what? So that's why he had his phone in his hand all night, not a pen.

  5. A

Ayoko po siyang ibagsak. Sariling gawa lang po ang hinihingi ko.

I don't want to fail him. All I'm asking for is his own work.

  6. B

Gagawa siya ng bago, sulat-kamay. Itaga mo sa bato, hindi na mauulit.

He'll write a new one, by hand. Mark my words, it won't happen again.
