Day 165: Ukay-Ukay or Brand New?
Unpacking a parcel of cheap new shirts in the apartment they share in Quezon City, Jeremy (A) shows off his haul to his housemate Maureen (B), who dresses almost entirely from ukay-ukay, the secondhand clothing shops.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Sa wakas, dumating na! Limang T-shirt, tatlong daan lang lahat.
Finally, it's here! Five T-shirts, just three hundred for all of them.
-
B
Ang mura nga. Ilang laba kaya bago magkabutas 'yan?
Cheap, sure. I wonder how many washes before they get holes.
-
A
New is still cleaner, and I don't have to dig through piles at the ukay.
-
B
I wash them before I wear them. Besides, old clothes are made of sturdier fabric.
-
A
Well, aren't you the eco-friendly one. But sometimes new is even cheaper online.
-
B
You'll wear those a few times, and then they're off to a landfill. Here's the deal: one month, nothing but ukay for you.
-
A
I'm in. But if I last, you're washing all my ukay clothes.
