Day 181 of 185

Day 181: Stop Burning the Leaves, Ma

On a Saturday morning in their yard in Malolos, Bulacan, Joanna (A), an environmental science graduate, finds her mother Rachel (B) about to burn a pile of dry leaves, as the family always has.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Ma, sandali lang po! Susunugin po ba ninyo 'yan?

Mom, wait! Are you going to burn those?

  2. B

Oo, gaya ng dati. Ang dami na, o.

Yes, same as always. Look how many there are.

  3. A

Bawal na po 'yan, may multa na sa barangay. Bukod pa rito, inuubo po si Lola sa usok.

That's banned now, the barangay gives fines. Besides, the smoke makes Lola cough.

  4. B

Tuyong dahon lang naman 'yan, hindi plastik. Ilang taon na naming ginagawa 'to.

They're just dry leaves, not plastic. We've been doing this for years.

  5. A

Usok pa rin po 'yan, kahit dahon lang. Dahil dito, huwag na po nating sunugin.

It's still smoke, even if it's just leaves. So let's not burn them anymore.

  6. B

Sige, ikaw ang may diploma. E ano'ng gagawin ko sa ganito karaming dahon?

Fine, you're the one with the diploma. So what am I supposed to do with all these leaves?
