Day 38: Tutoring Non-Readers for Free
In the small library of a public elementary school in Pandacan, Manila, Dolor (A), a retired teacher of seventy, comes to see the principal, Vilma (B), who was once her pupil.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Vilma, gusto kong turuang magbasa ang mga Grade 3 na hindi pa marunong.
Vilma, I want to teach the Grade 3 pupils who still can't read.
-
B
Salamat po, Ma'am. Kaso wala po kaming pambayad sa inyo.
Thank you, Ma'am. The problem is, we have no money to pay you.
-
A
Wala akong hinihinging bayad. Bagaman retirado na ako, kaya ko pang magturo.
I'm not asking to be paid. I may be retired, but I can still teach.
-
B
Sigurado po kayo, Ma'am? Wala po talagang kapalit?
Are you sure, Ma'am? Nothing at all in return?
-
A
Wala. Gayon pa man, dito lang ako sa library, ayoko nang umakyat ng hagdan.
Nothing. That said, I'm staying right here in the library. I'm done with stairs.
-
B
Sige po. Kayo nga po ang nagturo sa aking magbasa, e.
Of course. You're the one who taught me to read, after all.
