Day 39 of 185

Day 39: Off the Record, Please

At a coffee shop near a public hospital in Santa Cruz, Manila, Claudine (A), a young TV reporter, has a favor to ask her friend Nina (B), an emergency room nurse.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Nins, puwede ba kitang i-interview on cam tungkol sa ER ninyo?

Nins, can I interview you on camera about your ER?

  2. B

Naku, Clau, siguro hindi ako ang tamang kausap diyan.

Oh, Clau, I'm probably not the right person to talk to about that.

  3. A

Bakit naman? Ikaw mismo ang nakakita, dalawa-dalawa ang pasyente sa isang kama.

Why not? You've seen it yourself, two patients to a bed.

  4. B

Totoo 'yan, off the record. Pero baka masabon ako ng chief nurse namin.

That's true, off the record. But our chief nurse might chew me out.

  5. A

Kahit naka-blur ang mukha mo? Iibahin ko pa ang boses mo.

Even with your face blurred? I'll even change your voice.

  6. B

Mahirap talaga, Clau. Ilalapit na lang kita sa spokesperson ng ospital.

It's really tricky, Clau. Let me put you in touch with the hospital's spokesperson instead.
