Over coffee in Makati, Gabrielle (A), who grew up in a condo there, asks her boyfriend Jules (B), who is from Pangasinan, about a favor his mother wants from her.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

  1. A

Ano raw 'yung favor ng mama mo, Jules?

So what's this favor your mom wants, Jules?

  2. B

She wants you to be a sagala in the Santacruzan in Calasiao next month.

  3. A

Me, a sagala? Oh, I'd be so shy, I'm not used to parading in front of a whole town.

  4. B

It's easy, you just walk under an arch.

  5. A

I might not be right for that. Maybe it'd be better if they picked a local girl.

  6. B

Ano kasi, medyo huli na. Pinapatahi na ni Mama ang gown mo.

Well, the thing is, it's a little late. Mom's already having your gown made.

  7. A

She's already having it made? Then I guess I have no choice, as long as you're my escort.
