Day 72: Absent for the Harvest
Marvin (B), a young teacher at a public elementary school in Candaba, Pampanga, visits the rice farm of Mang Isko (A), whose two grandchildren have been missing class since the harvest began.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Aba, Sir Marvin, napadpad ka rito sa bukid? Sumilong ka muna.
Well, Sir Marvin, what brings you out to the fields? Come out of the sun.
-
B
Salamat po. Dalawang linggo na po ang pagliban ng mga apo ninyo.
Thank you. Your grandchildren have been absent for two weeks now.
-
A
Kailangan ko sila sa pag-aani. Wala akong pambayad sa ibang tauhan.
I need them for the harvest. I can't afford to pay other hands.
-
B
Naiintindihan ko po. Pero baka po sila mapag-iwanan sa klase.
I understand. But they might fall behind in class.
-
A
Pagkatapos ng anihan, babalik sila. Isang linggo na lang, Sir.
After the harvest, they'll be back. Just one more week, Sir.

B
Kung ganoon po, dadalhan ko na lang sila ng module na sasagutan nila sa gabi.
In that case, I'll bring them modules they can work on at night.
