Day 73: The Floor We Keep Raising
In Hagonoy, Bulacan, where high tide now floods the streets even without rain, Lydia (A), a civil engineer who lives in Malolos, visits her father, Andres (B), a retired fisherman, as the water comes into his house again.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

A
Tay, wala pong ulan, pero baha na naman.
Dad, it isn't even raining, and you're flooded again.
-
B
Ipapataas ko ulit ang sahig. Dalawang beses ko nang nagawa 'yan.
I'll have the floor raised again. I've done it twice already.
-
A
Hindi na po ito simpleng baha. Ang paglubog po ng lupa ang problema.
This isn't ordinary flooding anymore. The problem is that the land itself is sinking.
-
B
Mas tataasan ko pa. Dito na ako tumanda, anak.
Then I'll raise it even higher. I've grown old in this house, sweetheart.
-
A
Kahit itaas po ninyo ulit, aabutan pa rin kayo ng tubig. Sa amin na lang po kayo tumira.
Even if you raise it again, the water will still catch up with you. Just come live with us.
-
B
Pag-iisipan ko. Pero habang nag-iisip ako, ipapataas ko pa rin ang sahig.
I'll think about it. But while I'm thinking, I'm still having the floor raised.
