Day 95 of 185

Day 95: The Seat Reserved for Seniors

On a crowded EDSA Carousel bus, Via (A) wants her grandmother, Lola Loleng (B), to take the seat reserved for senior citizens, but Lola Loleng insists she can stand.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

La, may bakante po sa priority seat. Umupo na po kayo.

Lola, there's an empty priority seat. Go ahead and sit down.

  2. B

Kaya ko pang tumayo. Ibigay mo 'yan sa iba.

I can still stand. Give it to someone else.

  3. A

Kayo po mismo ang nagsabi kahapon na masakit ang tuhod ninyo.

You said yourself yesterday that your knee hurts.

  4. B

Masakit nga, pero hanggang Ayala lang naman tayo.

It does, but we're only going as far as Ayala.

  5. A

Malayo pa po ang Ayala. Ano po ba talaga ang dahilan?

Ayala's still a long way off. What's the real reason?

  6. B

Hindi naman sa pagod ako, kundi ayokong magmukhang matanda. "Senior Citizen" pa ang nakasulat sa upuan.

It's not that I'm tired. I just don't want to look old. The seat even says "Senior Citizen" on it.

  7. A

Sige na po, La. Haharangan ko po ang karatula para walang makakita.

Come on, Lola. I'll stand in front of the sign so nobody sees it.
