Day 10 of 160

Day 10: Too Deep to Pronounce

Two days before the Buwan ng Wika program at his son's school, Arnel (A) asks his friend Erning (B), a former radio announcer, to polish the speech he must give as the parents' representative.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Pare, pakinisin mo nga 'tong talumpati ko para sa Buwan ng Wika.

Bro, could you polish this speech of mine for Buwan ng Wika?

  2. B

Akin na. Simulan mo nang ganito: "Sa ating kagalang-galang na punong-guro at sa ating mga pinagpipitaganang panauhin."

Give it here. Start it like this: 'To our most honorable principal and to our esteemed guests.'

  3. A

Pinagpipi, pinagpita, ano 'yon? Hindi ko 'yan mabibigkas nang buo!

Pinagpipi, pinagpita, what was that? I'll never get that out in one piece!

  4. B

Pinagpipitaganan. Sanayin mo ang dila mo, at papalakpakan ka ng buong eskuwelahan.

Pinagpipitaganan. Train your tongue, and the whole school will applaud you.

  5. A

E kung mabulol ako sa harap ng anak ko? Habambuhay niya akong aasarin.

And if I trip over it in front of my son? He'll tease me for the rest of my life.

  6. B

Sige: "Sa ating iginagalang na punong-guro at mga panauhin." Mas madali na?

Fine: 'To our respected principal and guests.' Easier now?

  7. A

Oo, pero ibalik mo ang "kagalang-galang"; 'yon lang ang nabigkas ko nang tama.

Yes, but put "kagalang-galang" back. It's the only one I said right.
