Day 102 of 160

Day 102: Thirty Years at Sea

At a maritime training center in Intramuros, Manila, Jestoni (B), a young HR officer, is interviewing Mang Romy (A), a retired ship's chief engineer applying to teach marine engineering part-time, and has just asked him a technical question.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Kapag bumagsak ang oil pressure, ihinto agad ang makina bago masira ang bearings.

If the oil pressure drops, you stop the engine right away, before the bearings get damaged.

  2. B

Kabisado po ninyo talaga ang makina. Huling tanong po: sanay po ba kayo sa online classroom?

You really know engines inside out. Last question: are you comfortable with an online classroom?

  3. A

Marahil hindi ako kasimbilis ng mga bata sa kompyuter, pero hindi naman siguro mahirap.

I'm probably not as quick on a computer as the young ones, but I don't suppose it's hard.

  4. B

Nakapag-video call na po ba kayo, o nakapag-upload ng file?

Have you ever made a video call, or uploaded a file?

  5. A

Linggo-linggo kaming nagvi-video call ng anak ko. Pero ang apo ko ang pumipindot.

My son and I video call every week. But my grandson does all the button-pressing.

  6. B

Maaari po namin kayong i-train, pero tila kailangan ninyo itong matutuhan bago ang pasukan.

We could train you, but it looks like you'd need to learn it before classes start.

  7. A

Iho, tatlumpung taon ako sa barko. Doon, hindi mo sasabihing kaya mo hangga't hindi mo pa nasusubukan.

Iho, I spent thirty years on ships. Out there, you don't say you can do something until you've tried it.

  8. B

Naiintindihan ko na po. Irerekomenda ko po kayo, pero sa training, kayo na po ang pipindot.

Now I understand. I'll recommend you, but at the training, you'll do the button-pressing yourself.
