Day 104 of 160

Day 104: Sell Out or Hold Out

Late at night in a coworking space in Ortigas, Jace (A) and Rhys (B), college friends who cofounded an app that lets sari-sari stores order stock by text, have until morning to answer a big distributor's offer to buy them out.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Singkuwenta milyon, pare.

Fifty million, man. Isn't this what we dreamed of back in the dorm?

  2. B

Sure, but what if they just shut the app down after a year?

  3. A

Why would they shut down something they paid so much for? Who does that?

  4. B

Isn't that exactly the point? Once we're gone, the stores will have no one to order from but them.

  5. A

And our twelve people? We've only got two months of money left, or did you forget?

  6. B

May third option.

There's a third option. What if we sell them just a stake, as long as the app stays open to everyone?

  7. A

Just a stake, and their competitors get to benefit too? Why would they ever agree to that?

  8. B

Hindi ba't sila ang unang tumawag? Dalawampung libong tindahan ang hawak natin, pare.

Weren't they the ones who called first? We've got twenty thousand stores, man.

  9. A

All right, type up the counteroffer while I'm still feeling brave.
