Day 113 of 160

Day 113: The Surname Decree of 1849

At the National Archives in Manila, Marj (A), a young nurse tracing her family tree, asks Zeny (B), an archivist, about the surnames in her grandmother's town.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Ma'am, why do almost all the surnames in my grandmother's town start with B?

  2. B

That's no coincidence. Under Governor-General Clavería's decree of 1849, every family chose a surname from a catalog.

  3. A

Chose? You mean our surname didn't come from our Spanish ancestor?

  4. B

Lahat, B.

Here's the catalog, and this is the page assigned to your town. All B's.

  5. A

Oh, it's right here: Bustamante, third from the top.

  6. B

It was carried out town by town, to make it easier to collect taxes and count people.

  7. A

So Lola's story about the Spanish captain was just made up?

  8. B

Maaaring may kapitan nga, maaaring wala.

Maybe there was a captain, maybe not. But your surname started on this page.

  9. A

Could I get a copy of this? On Christmas Eve, I'll be the one telling Lola a story.
