Day 129: Q&A After the Restoration

During the Q&A after a screening of a restored 1980s Filipino classic at a Manila film festival, Mang Badong (A), an old moviegoer, takes the microphone to challenge Anton (B), a young critic who has called the old films overrated, while Remy (C), the festival programmer, moderates.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Are you the critic who said the films of the eighties are overrated?

  2. B

Yes, that's me. But what I said was, not everything old is a masterpiece.

  3. A

Totoong ulan, totoong putik!

Weren't the films back then braver, even without computers? Real rain, real mud!

  4. B

Matapang po, totoo. Pero paano po kung nostalgia lang iyan?

Brave, yes, that's true. But what if that's just nostalgia?

  5. A

Nostalgia?

Nostalgia? I was a projectionist for thirty years, son, so I know which ones stuck.

  6. C

Mang Badong, it's supposed to be one question each. There are a lot of people still in line.

  7. A

Last question, dear. Anton, in the strike scene, did you notice the man with the red umbrella?

  8. B

Yes, he's the only one who looked at the camera. That's my favorite moment in the film.

  9. A

That was me. I was twenty-two, and the director yelled at me for that look.
