Day 130: Settling Up With a Kumpare
On the newly renovated veranda of a house in Cainta, Danilo (A), a contractor, presents the final bill to the homeowner, his kumpare Nestor (B): the job is over budget and three weeks late.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Pare, here's the final bill. All in all, we're fifteen percent over budget.
-
B
Labinlima? Tatlong linggo na nga kayong late, may patong pa?
Fifteen? You were three weeks late, and now there's extra on top?
-
A
Isa-isahin natin.
Let's go through it. The tiles you switched halfway through cost almost double.
-
B
The tiles I'll accept, I picked them. But the extra labor, didn't we already settle that back in June?
-
A
Maybe I did fall short too, pare. Two of my carpenters got sick, and I didn't tell you.
-
B
That's just it. What hurt was hearing from my neighbor that nobody was working here.
-
A
You're right, and it won't happen again. I'll take off the extra labor, and you just pay for the tiles.
-
B
Patas 'yan.
That's fair. Can I pay off the tiles in installments until December?
-
A
Walang problema.
No problem. But I'm invited to the first get-together on this veranda, okay?
