Day 132: Our Café Name Is Taken
In the café they plan to open next month in Kapitolyo, Pasig, Rommel (A), a barista, finds his business partner and friend Kevin (B), who handles the paperwork, reading a letter from the intellectual property office.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

Kev, why so serious? The signboard goes up tomorrow, we should be celebrating.

A letter from IPOPHL. Listen: "Pursuant to the Intellectual Property Code, this name is already registered in connection with café services."

Ano raw? Tagalugin mo nga, hindi ako abogado.
Meaning what? Say it in normal Tagalog, I'm not a lawyer.

A company in Cebu has already registered "Tagpuan" for coffee shops.
-
A
Cebu's so far away! Can't we fight for it? We're not even on the same island.
-
B
The registration covers the whole country, bro. We could get a lawyer, but that might cost more than the whole café.

A
Paano 'yung limandaang cup na may logo? At 'yung signboard na bayad na?
What about the five hundred cups with our logo? And the signboard we've already paid for?
-
B
It's cheaper to change it now than to tear it down after a lawsuit. Start thinking of a new name.

A
"Kape ni Vising," after my grandmother. But search it first before I order a signboard.
