Day 151: Two Stories, One Too Similar
In a university library in Diliman, Pepe (A) and Lisa (B), two judges of a national short story contest in Filipino, narrow the finalists down to two.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Two left, Lisa: "Lunod" (Drowned) and "Kahon ng Posporo" (Matchbox). For me, "Lunod" wins.
-
B
"Lunod" is excellent, all right. But as I read it, I felt I'd read it before.
-
A
Saan mo nabasa?
Where did you read it? Stories that have already been published aren't allowed in the contest.
-
B
It seems to resemble a story in Liwayway from the seventies. It may just be a coincidence, but we should look into it.
-
A
Magkaiba 'yon.
Are the sentences the same, or just the plot? Those are two different things.
-
B
The plot, and even the last scene. But the sentences are different, even better.
-
A
Kung ganoon, hindi natin masasabing kinopya. Ano'ng sasabihin natin sa organizers?
Then we can't say it was copied. What do we tell the organizers?
-
B
Let's write that it may resemble an earlier work, and that they should talk to the author before the announcement.
-
A
Tama.
Right. Tonight I'll reread my first novel; maybe I've got a "resemblance" or two myself.
