Day 159 of 160

Day 159: Announcing the Turbulence

In the cockpit of a domestic flight waiting to leave Manila for Puerto Princesa, Nash (A), a young first officer, practices his announcement about a delay and the turbulence expected on the way in front of Captain Vic (B).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

  1. A

Captain, please listen to my announcement before I read it to the passengers.

  2. B

Sige, Nash. Kunwari ako ang pasaherong takot lumipad.

Go ahead, Nash. Pretend I'm a passenger who's scared of flying.

  3. A

Ladies and gentlemen, we'll be delayed by thirty minutes, and there's strong turbulence ahead over Mindoro.

  4. B

There, half the plane is praying already. Don't say "strong" if you're not sure yet.

  5. A

E ano po ang dapat kong sabihin? Ayaw ko rin naman pong magsinungaling.

Then what should I say? I don't want to lie either.

  6. B

Like this: "We may experience some light turbulence over Mindoro, but the weather in Puerto Princesa looks good."

  7. A

Totoo po iyon, at hindi nakakatakot. Paano naman po ang delay?

That's true, and it's not scary. What about the delay?

  8. B

Tell them the reason; people are calmer when they know why they're waiting. Here's the mic.

  9. A

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. We're sixth in line for the runway, so we'll be waiting about thirty minutes.
