Day 17 of 160

Day 17: Wizard or Salamangkero

At a small publishing house in Quezon City, Yolly (A), the editor, sits down with Paul (B), a young translator, and Sixto (C), a retired komiks writer she hired to review Paul's Filipino translation of a fantasy novel.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Paul, nabasa na ni Mang Sixto ang salin mo, at marami siyang puna.

Paul, Mang Sixto has read your translation, and he has a lot of notes.

  2. B

Handa na po ako; ano po ang pinakamabigat, Mang Sixto?

I'm ready. What's the biggest one, Mang Sixto?

  3. C

Hindi "wizard" ang isusulat natin kundi salamangkero, at orasyon ang "spell."

We won't write "wizard," we'll write salamangkero, and "spell" becomes orasyon.

  4. B

Pero mga teenager po ang babasa nito; "wizard" ang alam nila mula sa mga laro.

But teenagers are going to read this. "Wizard" is the word they know from games.

  5. C

Noong panahon ko, sa komiks natuto ng malalim na Tagalog ang mga bata.

In my day, kids learned deep Tagalog from komiks.

  6. A

Sige, salamangkero sa buong libro, may talahuluganan sa dulo, at ikaw ang gagawa niyon, Paul.

All right, salamangkero all through the book, with a talahuluganan, a glossary, at the back. And you're writing it, Paul.

  7. B

Talahuluganan? Sige po, pero ang unang salitang ilalagay ko roon ay "talahuluganan."

A talahuluganan? Fine, but the first word I'm putting in it is "talahuluganan."
