Day 18 of 160

Day 18: Half a Harvest, Full Rent?

At his family's house in San Miguel, Bulacan, Agustin (A), who has just taken over his father's rice land, receives Hilario (B), an older farmer who has leased it for forty years, and Hilario's daughter Myrna (C), who have come about the rent after a typhoon ruined half the harvest.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Please have a seat, Mang Hilario. What brings you here?

  2. B

We harvested only thirty cavans, half the usual, because of the typhoon.

  3. C

If the rent is still fifteen cavans, there'll be almost nothing left.

  4. A

I understand, but I'm paying off a bank loan too.

  5. B

I tilled that land for forty years, and not once did I fail your father.

  6. C

Just half the rent this harvest, and we'll make it up next season.

  7. A

All right, seven and a half cavans for now. Forty years count for more than a debt.
