Day 73: Say the Suspension First
In the press room of San Juan City Hall, Riza (A), the city's new young spokesperson, rehearses the announcement of tomorrow's class suspension with Agnes (B), the city information officer.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
I'll start: "Pursuant to Executive Order No. 7, in connection with the typhoon..."
-
B
Hep, hep.
Whoa, whoa. By the third word, the parents have already scrolled on.
-
A
But Ma'am, that's how the order is worded.
-
B
Iisa ang hinihintay nila: may pasok ba o wala? Iyan ang unahin mo.
They're waiting for one thing: are there classes or not? Say that first.
-
A
Opo.
Okay. "There are no classes tomorrow at all levels, public and private, in San Juan."
-
B
Ganyan.
That's it. Then add the "pursuant to the order" part, for the lawyers and the reporters.
-
A
What if they ask whether city hall employees have to report for work?
-
B
The mayor hasn't decided on that yet, so just say: "Watch for the next advisory."
