Day 74: A Headline That Baits
At the sports desk of a news website in Ortigas, Ronnie (A), the sports editor, reads the headline that Brent (B), a young writer, wrote for a story about a basketball player's trade.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Brent, ano 'to, teleserye?
"You Won't Believe Where Mendoza Ended Up"? Brent, what is this, a soap opera?
-
B
Sir, that's what works these days. Who's going to click on "Mendoza Traded for Two Rookies"?
-
A
Isn't our job the news, not bait for clicks?
-
B
But isn't it true that no news gets read if nobody clicks?
-
A
What if they do click, then find out it's just a trade? They won't come back.
-
B
Tell you what: let's test both. Half the readers get one, half get the other.
-
A
I'm game. But what we count is how many read to the end, not just clicks.
-
B
Fair enough. But if mine wins, I pick the headline for the next trade.
