Day 75 of 160

Day 75: The Pork Problem

In the kitchen of their bento lunch delivery business in Pasig, Cathy (A) and her business partner Jay (B), who does the buying, meet about pork prices, which have jumped since an outbreak of African swine fever in Luzon.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Jay, pork shoulder's up another fifty? How are we supposed to make money on the adobo?

  2. B

It seems prices won't come down as long as there's ASF in Luzon, but that could change.

  3. A

Puro ka "tila" at "maaari," parang taga-PAGASA. Ilang linggo pa ba, sa tingin mo?

All "seems" and "could," like somebody from PAGASA. How many more weeks, you think?

  4. B

Fine, in market Tagalog: maybe until Christmas, maybe until summer.

  5. A

Well, we can't wait until Christmas. Menu or price, we decide now.

  6. B

Manok muna kaya?

If we raise prices, the regulars might switch to other bento places. Chicken for now, maybe?

  7. A

Manok mula Lunes hanggang Huwebes, baboy tuwing Biyernes. Iyan ang forecast ko, walang "tila."

Chicken Monday to Thursday, pork on Fridays. That's my forecast, no "seems" about it.
