Day 82 of 160

Day 82: No Interest, Just Sundays

At her sari-sari store in Malabon, Aling Basyang (A), a retired fish vendor, is lending Nonoy (C), a young tricycle driver from her street, the money for a new sidecar, and her grandson Isaac (B), a law student, has drafted the promissory note.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Isaac, apo, linawin mo ang pagkakasulat, ha. Ayokong magkasamaan kami ng loob ni Nonoy.

Isaac, dear, make the wording clear, okay? I don't want any bad blood between Nonoy and me.

  2. B

It's done, La. In short, Nonoy: three thousand a month for a year, and no interest.

  3. C

Talaga po bang walang tubo, Aling Basyang? Sa five-six po, ang laki ng patong.

Really no interest, Aling Basyang? With the five-six lenders, the markup is huge.

  4. A

Who said it was free? Isaac, add this: every Sunday, my rides to and from the market are free.

  5. B

La, that's not in any promissory note we've studied.

  6. A

Well, now there is. At my age, a ride matters more than interest.

  7. C

Absolutely! I'll even drive you to church.

  8. B

Sign it now, Nonoy, before Lola adds another condition.
