Day 83 of 160

Day 83: Great-Grandpa's Sedula

Clearing out their grandmother's old cabinet in Malolos, Aldrich (A), a high school student, finds their great-grandfather's sedula from the 1920s, and his older sister Rica (B), a nurse, sees him taking pictures of it.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Ate, tingnan mo 'to!

Ate, look at this! Lolo Isko's sedula, our great-grandfather's.

  2. B

Dahan-dahan, marupok na 'yan. Bakit mo kinukunan ng litrato?

Careful, that's fragile. Why are you taking pictures of it?

  3. A

I'm selling it. A collector in an online group has already offered ten thousand.

  4. B

Did you know the Katipuneros tore up their sedulas in 1896? It was the signal for the revolution.

  5. A

I know, we learned that in social studies. But this one's from 1924, Ate, there was no revolution by then.

  6. B

That's not the point. It's the only thing left with Lolo Isko's signature, and you'd sell it?

  7. A

Come on, Ate, it's been sitting in a cabinet for over a hundred years.

  8. B

Grab for a handful and you lose the whole sack. That's not just a piece of paper, Aldrich.

  9. A

Fine, I won't sell it. But let's get it framed, so it isn't just hidden in a cabinet.
